Theologian J.I. Packer discussing “What Is the Lord’s Supper?”

  1. chaddamitz says:

I almost fully agree with Dr. Packer. I think there are two extremes. First, I do not believe the elements convert into the actual blood and body of our Lord. For He was crucified once for the sins of the world.

However, while it does say do this in “remembrance” of me, there is no mention of it being merely symbolic. Jesus didn’t say this is a symbol of my broken body and this is a symbol of my blood. Our theological presuppositions add “symbolism” into 1 Corinthians 11:24 to fit our worldview.

If it was merely symbolic, then how were people literally getting sick if they drank it in an unworthy manner? The Lord’s Supper goes beyond the symbol. There is something real, serious, and awesome about this ordinance in the church. Do I know what to call it? Not exactly, but I don’t think symbol does justice for it either. Thoughts?
